Build the Foundation Before You Build the Brand

One of my favorite conversations is sitting down with someone who's getting ready to start a business. You can hear the excitement in their voice as they tell me about their idea.

Almost every time, the conversation goes something like this:

"I've already got a logo."

"I picked out my business name."

"I even had business cards printed."

And I'm smiling.

I'm genuinely excited because I can see how proud they are of what they've built so far.

But at the same time, I'm getting a little anxious.

Not because they've done anything wrong, but because we skipped over the foundation.

I hear things like:

"We picked the business name because it's the initials of all our kids."

"These are my favorite colors."

"I already paid someone to build my website."

There's nothing wrong with any of those decisions.

But they're all decisions that should come after we've answered the bigger questions.

So, whether you're just getting started or you're willing to take a step back and look at your business with fresh eyes, let's build the foundation before we build the brand.

Let's talk about your business.

Why does it exist?

Who are you trying to help?

What problem are you solving?

How do you want customers to feel after working with you?

Who do you expect will walk through your door or visit your website?

Once we have those answers, then let's build the brand.

Let's choose colors that connect with the people you're trying to reach.

Let's pick fonts that are easy to read.

Let's create a business name that's memorable and easy to say.

Let's build a brand that isn't just beautiful—but makes sense.

Let's build the foundation that your brand can stand on.
